Welcome to the edge of civilization, where brigands rule and where the shadows are long.

In tiny villages, people huddle in fear as terrors prowl the night.

Out here, your word is as good as your sword and nobody will miss you.

Five Leagues From the Borderlands is a set of solo miniatures rules for fantasy campaign games.

Taking inspiration from gritty "medieval-fantasy" like The Black Company and Harn, this is a world of brutal combat and ever-present danger.

With a handful of miniature figures, your dice and these rules, you can adventure in the war-torn Borderlands, fight tactical battles against evil and maybe even  get a few coins in the process.

Your characters will advance as you go along, find loot and might even make it to the end.

Five Leagues is a descendent of the Five Parsecs series of games, offering a game experience written specifically for Solo Players:

That means that all the mechanics you need are built right into the rules, instead of being an afterthought stuffed in the back of the book.

We've aimed to make the mechanics simple and straight-forward, to make it easier and quicker to play on your own.

And the adventure and encounter tables will do pretty much all the set-up for you, allowing you to just sit down with your dice and have an adventure.

* * *

Please be advised this is a tactical game: You will need miniatures, tokens, markers or something else to represent your characters in combat.

A typical battle will have 8-10 figures on each side.

You get a full campaign game to play through, tackling different threats and watching your story unfold.

* * *

What is new in this Second Edition?

A LOT!

The new version has been polished and improved, tidying up the rules, getting rid of excessive dice rolling and improving the pacing of the campaign game.

In addition we’ve added:

Difficulty settings for players who want more or less challenge.

An Unusual background table for your characters.

Monsters from ogres to dragons. And a random monster generator.

Village events.

Encounters are far more varied: Enemy strengths and flaws, leadership figures, unusual battle conditions (from fighting in the rain to haunted terrain) and each type of Threat now has its own unique encounter table.
Many enemies also have special rules now, to make them more unique.

Multiple options for tailoring a long term campaign, such as “new game plus” options and large-scale campaign events such as holy crusades, rat-men invasions or the literal end of days!

Tons of new items to find, including magical weapons, potions and scrolls.

And much MUCH more.

Cheers. When going through the purchase process, there is a way to send a purchase as a gift if you have his email account.
The file itself should have no specific device restrictions at all.

If you do run into difficulty, email me at nordicweaselgames@icloud.com and I can help figure it out for you.

Is there any way of buying a proper printed copy of this game- as opposed to a PDF? I don't like PDF's to be honest and I like proper printed manuals.

Soooo, I'm finding the plethora of systems with the number "Five" a bit confusing. There's 5-Core, several derivations of 5 parsecs [which it appears was written by you but is now being published by someone else]. Is there any way to make the Wargames Vault store a bit more organized by design / rules family?

Finding the 5 Kilometers from Leipzig Beta rules quite interesting, which is what got me searching around.

Yeah, my apologies, I'll see if I can find a better way.

There's essentially two families: Fivecore (including Five men in normandy and Five men at kursk) on one side and the "Five X from Y" series (Five leagues, five parsecs, five klicks).

The reason for the confusion is that the original 5 parsecs was actually based on the fivecore system, hence the name.

If you found Leipzig of interest, you'll want to look into either five leagues from the borderlands, five klicks from the zone (post-apoc) or five parsecs (now available in a deluxe version from Modiphius or as the intro game Bug Hunt).

I hope that helps a tiny bit, sorry!

Cheers, the preview got messed up when I added the reference sheet so let me see if I can fix that this weekend. The book is 161 pages of content, plus a few extra pages of change logs, designer notes etc.

Hello!

While I wait for my order of Five Parsecs to arrive from Modiphius I thought I might tackle the Five Leagues bundle. It looks immensely enjoyable and it's not like there aren't a pile of minis sitting on shelves gathering dust in need of an adventure. Many thanks for your fine work.

Hello there!

Other than fantasy setting versus sci-fi, what are the differences between this game and the new retail version of Five Parsecs From Home? I'm also curious about the differences between Five Parsecs and Starport Scum if it isn't too much trouble. From what I can glean of the descriptions, Dungeon Scum seems similar to Five Leagues, Starport Scum seems similar to Five Parsecs and the difference between those two pairs seems to be the setting.

Thank you!

Cheers!
The core concept (a group of characters does things around town, then they go fight) is the same between Leagues and Parsecs. Differences include how combat is handled (Leagues has a far more involved melee system with combatants pushing back and forth), the campaign structure (Parsecs is more open-ended like tv show episodes whereas in Leagues you are fighting to clear a region of enemies). Leagues has NPC type encounters while Parsecs has more types of missions to undertake and so on.
There's honestly too many differences to really detail all of them here, but I hope that helps get the point across?

Starport/Dungeon Scum is more of a pseudo RPG with an emphasis on creating your own scenarios (though it is playable solo and most do). Five Parsecs, like Leagues, is aimed to be 100% "out of the box" meaning if you follow along the game text and roll on the various tables, you will have a complete game experience, though you can add your own scenarios too.

I will keep an eye open for them, then. The thing is that, if I get the core now, and then go for the bundle it will not end up being cheaper, and I'm a bit short on cash right now, so probably it will be buying one by one, and use some time in building up

It should adjust bundle prices for items you already own, but Im not sure if its a bit finnicky. Building up over time is not a bad option anyways though, more time to incorporate them into your games :)

I'm having a good time with Five Klicks, and thinking of trying out Five Leagues. Is there a list anywhere of all of the content that is compatible with the 2nd edition of Five Leagues? It is a bit confusing with a mix of 1st and 2nd edition stuff on here.

Any chance of a Five Leagues bundle containing the main rules and a few of the supplements that you would recommend for beginning players?

Awesome! Thanks for the quick reply.

I will hold off for a bit and see what goes in the bundle. I've got a bit of painting to finish off first and then I will send a warband of highland warriors out to find fame and riches in the borderlands.

Thanks again.

Hello. Very interested in this game to generate a solo campaign in Middle Earth (Arnor). I'm wondering if there is any update on a print on demand option yet before I part with my money? I can see someone else asked a few months ago. I prefer reading from a paper document rather than a PDF. Thanks for your answer in advance. Matt

I know a soothsayer add-on was released, but do you have plans for a full magic system? Dungeon Scum has some exceptionally well made spells. Why not incorporate some of them here? Casters can be rare encounters and even rarer to recruit. This way, the system remains low fantasy like here, but becomes more Black Company style. Few spells, rare casters, and grim results for failure to cast.

Regarding the section on broken line of sight -

If LOS is "broken" because the target is 3" past an area feature does that mean you can't fire (number 1)?

What does the third bullet point mean? How would the border of an area feature not be crossed?

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
